VoIP Options and Setup Explanations

What option is the right one for you?

The Option that best suits you will depend on what equipment you already have or what you plan to do in the future.

Some Terminology you need to know

Analogue Telephone This is a standard telephone the same as you use in your house (if you have one). You can also use the standard analogue walk about wireless phone on your VoIP system. Some walk about phones use the same frequency as wireless routers and may cause interference if placed too close to the wireless router.
DID number This is a real Australian Telephone Number and allows people on ordinary telephones, mobiles or other VoIP systems to ring you on your VoIP Phone.
ATA Device ATA = Analogue Telephone Adaptor
Connects an Analogue Telephone to a VoIP network
Usually has an Ethernet jack that plugs into your router or switch, and an RJ-11 phone jack (Stand telecom type Phone Connection)
Router A router acts as a connecting device and associates with our network. It also acts as a NAT Firewall. A NAT Firewall is one of the most common ways of protecting you computer from hackers that might try to get into you computer while you are connected to the internet. BA recommends that you use one of these routers if you don't have one already.
Wireless router Same as above with the added advantage of being able to use your laptop or other wireless devices (such as a PDA) wirelessly around your house. Please make sure that you set up the wireless security on these devices for your own protection.
Wireless router with built in ATA This Device does exactly the same as the wireless router above with the added advantage of being able to also do VoIP simply by plugging an analogue telephone and configuring the correct setting.
Wireless Security

Wireless Security is a special set of pass codes that are setup on your wireless router and on the devices that you want to connect to your wireless router. Because wireless routers can be seen by other devices up to 200M away (depending on location) anybody in that radius could connect to your Internet connection and use your account to download. Setting up the wireless security will help to prevent this.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not know how to do this it may pay to get an IT Professional to configure this for you. Broadband Anywhere CAN NOT help you to configure this as it is outside out charter of support., unless you are prepared to to pay the cost associated with a onsite callout.

OPTIONS

ATA
This device (V100 ATA) will be pre configured with your VoIP number and settings. When you receive it needs to be plugged into your home network as shown in the diagram above.

NOTE: Some routers may need some special settings before your VoIP will work. BA can supply you with these setting if needed. However if you require a site call from one of our technicians the standard onsite service charges will apply. If you do not have a router then you will need to choose one of the options below.

Router + ATA or Wireless Router +ATA
BA will supply all devices pre configured with your VoIP number and settings and ready to attach to your current Internet connection.

Which Router do I get?

If you are never planning on getting a laptop, PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) or a computer with a wireless network card then the best and safest option is just to get the standard router. If you choose to get the wireless router please remember Wireless Security will not be configured on this device but the wireless side of the router will be active as a unsecured wireless network.

Why the option of a router and separate ATA?

This option is for those who may wish to have the phone some distance from the computer or Internet connection. A VoIP phone will only work while the Internet connection is active, the ATA device flash an orange light if it is unable to contact our VoIP service. That way you know that the phone is not active. To do this you will need a network cable long enough to get to the location where you want to place your ATA device and Phone.

How do I put it all together once I received my equipment?

To setup your devices just follow the wiring diagram and instructions supplied with your equipment. It may not be the same as the diagram above so please use the one supplied with your equipment.
